The Fairness Contract
Silhouette: The promise that a solver who pays attention can always get there from here.
The Terrain
Every puzzle is a transaction between two people who never meet. The designer hides something and the solver comes to find it. A promise holds the transaction together. The designer promises that the answer is reachable and every step fair. No solution should rest on a rule the solver was never given. Trusting this, the solver agrees to think rather than guess. Break the promise and the trust goes with it. A solver who no longer trusts the puzzle stops reasoning. That promise is the fairness contract. It is the ground every other puzzle concern stands on.
This family is the craft of investigation and discovery. Its articles cover sound clue construction, clue ordering, the puzzle types on offer, the insight payoff, and the graceful exit for a stuck solver. The mechanisms differ wildly. A cipher, a scavenger trail and a meta-puzzle share almost nothing mechanical, yet they all answer to the same contract. Fairness is the floor; everything else is built on it.
The contract is not the same as ease. A fair puzzle can be brutally hard. Fairness is a promise about reachability, not about effort: it says the path exists and the solver can find it with attention, not that the path is short. The whole art of this family is asking a great deal of the solver while keeping that promise intact.
When a puzzle is not landing, the instinct is to add another clue. Resist it. Ask first whether the clue you have is doing its work and whether the solver can even tell it is a clue. A cleaner signal almost always beats a louder one. And when your own notes start saying “but they should have realised,” stop: that sentence is usually the designer’s voice covering an unfair gap. The solver does not owe you the leap.
Key Mechanisms
The contract is set by Cluing & Fairness: every clue does real work, and the answer stays reachable behind fair misdirection. Once the clues are sound, their order becomes its own craft in Clue Sequencing & Chains. The scenario-wide map of which clues feed which conclusions is Information Architecture.
What a designer is actually choosing among is mapped by A Taxonomy of Puzzles, which sorts the space by what the mind is doing and what job each puzzle does in the hour around it. Two faculties earn their own treatment: the noticing puzzles of Search, Observation & Lateral Thinking and the encoded messages of Ciphers & Codes. The abstraction type that ends most puzzle sets, the answers-as-data step, is Extraction, Indexing & Meta-Puzzles, and the puzzle that judges its own solution is Self-Resolving Puzzles.
The contract is also taught and repaired. A good opening teaches the solver how to read the puzzle before it tests them: that is Teaching Through Play. The reward all of this builds toward is The Aha Moment. When a fair puzzle still leaves a particular solver stuck, the recourse is Hint Systems & Recovery.
At the scale of whole events the contract shapes formats: the feeders, rounds, and metas of Puzzle Hunt Craft, the distributed trail of Treasure & Scavenger Hunts, and the lineage they share in The Puzzle Hunt & ARG Tradition.
